Policies for Late Work, Unfinished Projects, and Absences

Policies for Late Work, Unfinished Projects, and Absences

Meeting deadlines is an essential part of developing time management and creative discipline.

Late Work Policy:

  • Grace Period: Students will have a 3-day grace period after the original due date to submit late work for partial credit (e.g., 10% off per day).

  • Beyond the Grace Period: After 3 days, the maximum grade a student can earn is 70%.

Exceptions may be made for extenuating circumstances (e.g., illness, family emergencies), provided the student communicates in a timely manner.

  • Ongoing Projects: For long-term projects, checkpoints and mini deadlines will be set to help students stay on track and avoid last-minute rushes.

Unfinished Projects Policy:

  • Accountability and Reflection: If a student struggles to finish a project on time, they will be asked to reflect on their time management and artistic decisions.

  • Partial Credit for Effort:

    • If significant progress is shown but the work is incomplete, students may receive partial credit with the option to resubmit the finished piece for re-evaluation.

    • The re-evaluation will allow for up to 10-15% point recovery, rewarding effort and final completion.

  • Resubmission Window: Students will have 1 week after the deadline to finish and resubmit incomplete work for additional credit.

Absence Policy:

  • Student Responsibility: It is the student’s responsibility to check Canvas for missed assignments, project instructions, and any reference materials.

  • Make-Up Time:

    • Students with excused absences will have one extra day per day missed to make up for the work.

    • For extended absences, they will be given a realistic and flexible deadline to catch up without being overwhelmed.

  • In-Class Demos/Techniques: If a student misses a hands-on demo, they may:

    • Watch a recorded demonstration (if applicable) or receive a brief one-on-one review during independent work time.

    • Refer to step-by-step instructions, video tutorials, or visual guides posted on Canvas.

Support and Communication:

  • Proactive Communication: Students are encouraged to communicate if they’re struggling to meet deadlines. One-on-one check-ins will be available for students who need extra support or extensions.

  • Extra Studio Time: When feasible, students may have the option to use the classroom or studio during free periods to catch up on projects.
